Do you have to stop if the bus does not put up its sign? I live beside c.k.s.s. and there is a school bus that picks up 2 students in the driveway (entrance) of the high school but never puts up the sign when the kids are boarding. I stop because it’s better to be safe but so many people don’t.
According to the Highway Traffic Act sec. 175, all bus drivers (while on a highway) have the responsibility to actuate the overhead red signal-lights and utilize the school bus stop arm once the door is open. In response to these actions, all drivers when meeting or approaching the school bus, must come to a stop and not pass until the overhead red-lights stop flashing.
For private property situations (which is related to your concern) the bus drivers do not have to actuate the red-lights or the stop arms. In these instances, other vehicles may proceed with caution and pass.
